The other day my boss was telling us about the neighbour across the hall from him at his condo complex. Apparently a soft, Jewish, Seth Rogan lookalike, he’s a recent cancer survivor and had understandably gone on an I-love-life spree, updating his Facebook status daily with such affirming cliches as “Live life to the fullest” or “Live each day as you would your last”.
But I’m learning lately that it’s easy to learn the wrong lessons. The lesson to be learned from coming out of a breakup is not necessarily “Fuck relationships” but “Fuck being in a relationship without realizing effort, responsibility and sacrifice it takes.” The lesson to be learned out of conquering cancer is not “Fuck it all I’m gonna live large brap brap” but “Fuck sweating the small stuff, I’m gonna live a life that means something, that carries some weight.”
Here’s to learning the right lessons, kids.
